|
| "Alebrijes" is the word that has
come to refer to the colorful menagerie of fantastic, carved wood
animals made in towns near Oaxaca, Oaxaca. Nevertheless, the "true"
alebrije is
a large headed "alien" with many antennae and popped-out eyes. Many people recognize each fantastic animal as a "nagual," an animal or being which represents the spirit or mystical force of the person who has dreamt or chosen it. |
However, at the
risk of demythologizing her own wonderful creations, one artist told me
in January, 2003, "As you know, about thirty-five years ago our town
began
imitating the beautiful papier-mache alebrijes made by a man in Mexico
City. We thought we could make pieces as beautiful using carved copal
wood." |
In many families,
the men carve and the women paint, but this is not a rule. In one
family,
one brother is the master carver and painter, but other brothers
carve and sisters paint. Copal wood is relatively soft but does not crack like pine although it is somewhat brittle. It also provides the sap used for the copal incense burned in traditional dances. |
