Rafael
García González paints within the limits of a
well-defined tradition, the art of "laca" painting. "Laca" refers
to wooden
objects, copper vessels, and gourds painted in lacquer, automotive to
be exact, then decorated with designs in gold leaf and artist’s oils. |
Mr. García, who was a professional boxer as a young adult, has done this work for almost forty years, having begun at age eight under the instruction of two older brothers, Rubén and Raúl, and an older sister, Gloria. He is the only sibling who still makes his living doing this work, and he is actively passing it on to his wife and three sons. |
The process begins with the painstaking drawing of the
design with a fine home-made glue. This is followed in about 24
hours with tamping on 23.5 karat gold leaf over the glue design.
The artist’s oils are painted on last in three stages, base, darks, and
lights, that is, main color, shadows, and lights. see Video page for more about the artist |
